I Need To Get An Amateur Radio Icon

I just passed my Ham test. I've arranged for a loaner radio. I should be in the FCC database by Monday.

awesome! Let us know your call when you get one, 'k?

I've been thinking about taking an upcoming test, actually--and if you've got a few free minutes sometime I might want to bug you with some questions...

peace,

also: loaner radio? ...from a friend of yours--?

Oh, trust me, when I get my call, there will be another post here. ;-)

It's pretty easy to get the license. Just a little bit of study will be all you need. You probably already know the electrical and physics stuff -- that was the hardest part for me. The rest of it is common sense and a little memorizing of a few things. There's no Morse Code anymore. Anyway, I have a few free minutes a lot -- drop me a not on IM and/or give me a call sometime. I'll be more than happy to talk with you about it.

As far as the loaner radio goes, one of the local clubs has a loaner program, which I'll be taking advantage of. I figure I'll get my own by the end of the year.

Yeah, maybe I will have time in the first quarter of 2008. I doubt I'll have time in the next couple months. ;)

cool!
Congrats! As a kid, I thought doing the amateur radio thing would be waaay fun. Then the internet arrived on the scene, and in some ways supplanted it in the area of geek hobbies. Computer stuff more than occupies my free time, or I might still be tempted to try it someday now that the Morse requirements have been relaxed.

Re: cool!
You should still look into it. The Morse requirements have been eliminated, not just relaxed. And if you want the hobby to be computer geek hobby, just spend more time on packet radio instead of voice radio. ;-)

Re: cool!
My father was a "ham" (I gave his callsigns in your other post; one of them has been reassigned.) He called it the original geek hobby, especially since men of his generation didn't have computers until they were adults. It's kind of cool, then, to see it become a computer geek hobby.

Someday I might study for it too. I started when I was younger but it was the Morse Code requirement that got in the way...

Re: cool!
The Morse Code won't get in the way anymore. Let me know when you decide to go for it!

On a completely unrelated subject, I keep meaning to tell you that the DTB/Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival is coming through Atlanta for New Years again (at the Fox). Of course, we'll be there. Maybe we can meet up again....
