Lenten Service

Today's Lenten Service featured a homily that focused on Judas as the trusted apostle, as opposed to Judas as the traitor. It was more scholarly than contemplative, and I was looking for contemplative. Once I got used to the delivery, I found it to be enriching. It's not giving me as much to think about as last week's service did, but I'm still thinking about it.

Judas, the "trusted" one? I don't see it. It's pretty clear that the inner circle are Peter, James and John. They always get to go where the other nine don't, including most especially the clearest revelation of Christ's divine glory, the Transfiguration.

Judas was trusted with the money bag.

So, he was trusted because he held the cash but the real inner circle got second best by beholding the Uncreated Light?

If there's one message clear in first century Palestinian culture, it's that people whose lives are intimately involved with money are regarded as unclean, i.e., that it's "dirty" work.

Anyway, I'm not buying it. This seems to me to be the Andrew Lloyd Weber Judas! :)

Fair enough. I do want to point out that the speaker wasn't intimating that the inner circle or the other disciples got second best -- I'm sorry if my description indicated otherwise. The main point seemed to be that it's shallow to sum up the entirety of Judas' life based solely on the betrayal.

Not that I'm up to defending the position, or the homily, but it did give me something to think about.

You didn't "indicate otherwise," or so it seemed to me. There just doesn't seem much to me in the Gospels to indicate any sort of "trusted" status for Judas other than his original inclusion in the Twelve.

Yeah, that's the point the speaker was trying to make -- like the other 11, Judas was a trusted disciple.
