Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I never read this book as a kid. My familiarity with the story stems mainly from the Disney adaptation and general knowledge. The Kindle version of the book was free, it was pretty short, and I decided I'd give it a shot.

I'm sorry I bothered.

This book is definitely *not* my cup of tea. I enjoyed the wikipedia entry about the book more than the book itself. It noted that the book is classified as "nonsense literature," and I cannot agree more. The book is utter nonsense. I just could not get into the spirit of the writing at all.

If you love this book, more power to you. I'll stick with the film adaptations. And I won't be reading "Through The Looking Glass."

You should've read this version:

http://www.amazon.com/Annotated-Alice-Definitive-Lewis-Carroll/dp/0393048470/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299492601&sr=8-1

Then you might understand the sense behind the nonsense.

Maybe so. But I don't think I care enough to go back and give it another chance.

Eh, if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

Too many books in the world, and too little time.

Read on, young man.

Yup. For those that love it, more power to them, and I'm not going to try to take anything away from them. I'm sure there are awesome complexities that I just "don't get" in there. But, *shrug*, it's not my thing.

More than anything, I'm just glad to be reading again.

You have to remember that it was written for an 8 year old girl in Victorian England. The witticisms, puns, and anagrams are too arcane for most of us, which is why the annotated versions are generally better to read. I do remember being pretty delighted by it when I read it at the age of 12, but I reread it a few months ago and, meh, not so much. Jabberwocky is still awesome though.
