I love the movie Cool Hand Luke. It's been a while since I've seen it. I was talking about good movies at supper today and remembered how much I enjoyed Cool Hand Luke. So I popped it into the DVD tonight to watch it again.
While watching it, I naturally wanted to find out more about it. I wanted to find out more about the song Plastic Jesus which was featured in it. I wanted to see what the names of some of the other actors were. So, of course, I turned to the Internet Movie Database. One of my favorite features of IMDB is the trivia section for movies. For Cool Hand Luke, the trivia include the following gems:
- Paul Newman, being the superb method actor that he is, really did eat all 50 of those eggs and got the bloated stomach to prove it.
- Luke's prison number (37) is a reference to the Bible - Luke 1:37.
And, perhaps my favorite:
- In the last scene the lights in the traffic signals are reversed: red on the bottom, green on top. Clearly it was the director's intent to defy authority.
One summer, when I was in high school, my pastor preached a sermon series based on movies. Each week, he used a different movie as a launch point for the sermon. The only two movies I remember him using were Born On The Forth Of July and Cool Hand Luke. Every time I watch this movie, I remember that sermon series. Boy, does this movie preach. I think Rev. Paulen could have easily spent the whole summer preaching sermons launched from Cool Hand Luke instead of using a different movie each week.
My favorite scene from Cool Hand Luke was when Luke's dirt was in Boss Kean's ditch. That scene always moves me. What's your favorite scene? Use the comments to tell me.
