New Truck!

I got a new truck Thursday night! I wasn't unhappy with my old truck, but Mrs. Mellow took a phone call from the local dealer where they told her about all their current incentives. She told me about it, and with the deals that the local dealership was offering last week, we decided to look into stepping up. At the end of the day, we gave them my six-year old truck, wrote a check for about a third of the sticker price of a new truck, and drove away with a brand-new 2003 Chevy S-10. She's similar to my old one, but with updates you might expect in six years -- the third door for the extended cab is now standard, the radio has a CD player, etc. She's red, well burgundy, and very comfortable and fun to drive. I think I'm going to be happy with her for years to come.

There are two things that I need to do soon. The first is get a bedliner. Before just going out and getting a bedliner like I had in my last truck, I'm considering getting one of those spray-on bedliners, like Rhino Linings. If anyone has any experience with spray-on linings, I'd love to hear about it. So far, I haven't heard anything bad about them. They're a bit more expensive than a regular bedliner, but look like they may be worth it.

The second thing I need to do is name my truck! Like I did when I named Rhonda (my motorcycle), I'm going to turn to my faithful blog readers for inspiration. I have established a bit of a naming pattern with my trucks so far and will tend to lean towards names that follow the pattern, but I'm open to other names as well. My trucks are female, so a female name is in order. I tend to gravitate towards names that are concatenations of two names, the second ending in "Ann" or "Anne." For example, my previous truck was named "Lorianne." Anyway, keep the pattern in mind, but don't let it constrain you.

Poll #165907 Truck!

Name drmellow's truck

I hope to name my truck by the end of next week, maybe sooner.

I'm a little confused. One of the purposes of a bed liner is to protect your truck, right? If that is the case, how does spraying on a substance that creates a permanent bond to your truck's surface protecting your truck? It's not like you can lift it out and see the shiny, scratch-free paint underneath!

Well, yes and no. Putting a traditional bedliner in your truck pretty much guarantees that you'll be using a bedliner forever. The liner itself might scratch the paint a bit. Plus, you have to drill into the truck in order to attach the bedliner to the the truck in the first place. The bedliner just lessens the amount of damage that the truck bed will take. In the case of my previous bedliner, I was mostly happy. However, over time, it started to have some problems -- the screws stared to rust and were constantly working themselves out, the bedliner cracked in a couple of places, etc. It was still in pretty good shape, but I probably would have been in the market for replacing it in the next year. With a spray on liner, I shouldn't have the same problems. Would I have other problems? Probably. What might they be? I don't know.

It's not about protecting your truck bed so that it will be all nice and shiny. It's not about scratches. It's about rust. And normal bed liners can trap water between the liner and the bed and encourage rust. Spray in liners not only prevent rust, but they can be much more easily repaired than your truck bed if something should happen to them.

Greg, both Line-X and Rhino have websites...check them out. My dad has the Rhino lining, and he seriously says it is THE best investment he has made on his truck. He likes the fact that the things he puts in the back of his truck don't slip and slide as much, too.

Did your dad happen to get his lining istalled in the Greensboro area? Any recommendations on who to get it done by?

I'll have to ask him and get back to you...he lives in Winston...I don't know where he got it done...
