Blast!

It appears that along with several of my co-workers, my computer at work has been infected with the MSBlast worm. So far today, I've been able to use my computer for about 5 or 10 minutes before it decides to reboot.

I should really just go home, I guess. There's probably very little point for me to stay here and try to work.

[Edit: My machine is now patched and it's back to the regular routine of work.]

Yet another reason I am glad I never use a PC.

You better believe that if I had a choice, I wouldn't be using a Windows box. I'll be very happy when the company approves linux for use as a desktop solution.

You just need to secure employment wherein you work solely with Mac OS X, as I have. ;)

I'd rather not, because I enjoy working on large-scale Unix systems. OS X isn't quite ready to play in that space.

Well, yeah, I do that some too, but you can't be OS X for a desktop system. :) If all you do is access Unix systems from your Windows box, OS X is just as good a Unix client system as Windows is. Maybe one day your employer will open to at least some other desktop system.

Does it affect windows ME? I haven't looked it up because I know that our home network is 2/3 Mac, but it dawned on me that the 1/3 who isn't Mac also isn't computer savvy and is usually the first person hit by these things. . .

*deep sigh of resignation*

I thought my days of reading volumes of "how to fix the NEXT BIG SECURITY ISSUE IN WINDOWS, unabridged, revised, edited and eventually burned" were over. Guess not.

What kills me is that they knew it was coming.

Government and industry experts have anticipated such an outbreak since July 16, when Microsoft acknowledged that the flaw affected nearly all versions of its flagship Windows operating system software.

Urgh. And apparently one of the embedded messages they found was "billy gates, why do you make this possible? Quit making money and fix your software!"

Well . . .

Link, if anyone's interested.

Apparently UNCG is battling similar problems. We had an email sent out to the students stating that the "W32.Blaster.Worm" had infected the systems. Bummer...

PATCH!!!!!!!!!!!
Install the blasted patch(es). Is it too much to ask that people visit windowsupdate once a week or so? Once patched, it will stop rebooting [windows reboots 60secs after the RPC service fails.]

Re: PATCH!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I'm patched now. I hadn't kept up with windowsupdate because, in the past, our sysadmins have told us to let them take care of doing that sort of thing on our machines. I guess that's so they feel like they have a better idea of what our current systems are like. Every now and then, I notice that something new is automatically installed on my machine by the network folks. Today, I've just learned that they're not as proactive as they would have had me believe. So you better believe that I'll be heading out to windowsupdate on a regular basis from here on out.

I only have this problem at work, 'cause at home I'm running a Macintosh behind a restrictive hardware and software firewall.

Glad you got sorted out, that thing was a right ****. I didn't know about it and simply thought I had been hacked, it was only after David suggested the possibility that I found out what it was.

I'd already manually found all the files and removed them myself (bit of luck really spotting a program called msblast.exe wanting to connect to the internet - strangely google didn't have any hits on it on monday night)

Glad your sorted, my box appears to be now ... till next time :)
