I Heard The News Today, Oh Boy

*ring* ... *ring*

drmellow Hello, this is Greg.
aunt_toad I thought you'd probably be up already.
drmellow Yeah.
aunt_toad I just wanted to let you know that Johnny Cash died.
drmellow Oh? Thanks. I hadn't heard that yet.
aunt_toad They said it was complications with diabetes.
drmellow Sure. That makes sense.

Wow. I'm not surprised, but still. There weren't any indications in that this was imminent in any of the articles I read about his hospital release yesterday, but I guess if you read between the lines, they were there.

Google News already has 170 articles about the subject, and I'm sure that more will be coming during as the day goes on. I'll be reading them as I have time. JohnnyCash.com was refusing my connections. I bet their servers are overloaded. I updated the site I maintain.

Here's my favorite duet that Johnny and June used to sing. I just heard a commentator say that the official cause of death is complications with diabetes, but Johnny probably died of a broken heart. I speculated that would happen, too.

Far Side Banks Of Jordan

I believe my steps are growing wearier each day,
Still I have a journey on my mind;
The wars of this old world has ceased to make me want to stay,
But my one regret is leaving you behind.

If it proves to be God's will that I am first to go,
And somehow I've a feeling it will be;
When it comes your time to travel, likewise, don't prolong,
For I will be there waiting, don't you see.

I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan,
I'll be waiting, drawing pictures in the sand;
And when I see you coming I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

Through this life we've labored hard to earn our meager fare,
It brought us trembling hands and failing eyes;
I'll just rest there on the shore and wait for that glad day,
Until you join me there in paradise.

I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan,
I'll be waiting, drawing pictures in the sand;
And when I see you coming I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan,
I'll be waiting, drawing pictures in the sand;
And when I see you coming I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

I've been thinking of you since I heard the news.

That's a beautiful song, I love the lyrics.

I didn't know until I read your post (I'm kinda slow today), but I'm sorry. It's hard when you lose a hero.

(I appreciate your posting these lyrics, though - I've been looking for them for about a month, only I didn't know it was a Johnny Cash song; I only knew a snippet.)

Glad to help you with the song. It's not just a Johnny/June duet -- I actually found the lyrics at a site for someone else. It's a great song.

I hadn't heard until I looked at LJ this morning.

Makes me think about my own marriage...and whether either of us is going to make it to Jordan's far side in the first place.

We lost another living legend today. Our only recompense is that now he will be eternally enshrined. Let this inspire us to show more appreciation for the truly wonderful people we have in our lives while we still can.

Comiserations
Sorry to hear about his passing dude, especially after yesterdays post about him being released and going back to work on the new album.

Maybe you could do a Top 10 songs by Cash that you like and why you like them?

Re: Comiserations
That's a good idea -- look for it in the next few days.

Condolences
I know how important Johnny Cash was to you; the news of his death was the first thing that we heard when we woke up this morning, and I thought of you.

I also thought that if there was one guy who I wouldn't expect to end up linked to both Nine Inch Nails and John Ritter, it would be Johnny Cash.

Re: Condolences
Someone else in LJ land said that they better put Johnny Carson on alert. It's a bad day for folks named John.

Saved by the lack of an H, I guess...
