NaNoWriMo: Crazy, stupid, or both?

My mother thinks I don't get enough sleep. She's probably right, but there are simply too many fun things to do and not enough time to do them unless I stay up past my bedtime.

So, since I'm already filling my time with lots of stuff to do, it only makes sense to take on yet another hobby. This hobby will be writing. Specifically, I intend to write a complete novel this November. It's all part of NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month. I've considered doing this for at least two years, maybe three, but have always come up with an excuse not to even attempt it. This year, I realized that there will never be a November for me that will be optimal for participating, so I just need to jump in feet first. I think I've convinced a buddy or two to participate, too, which will serve to help encourage me to stay on task.

So, between now and November, I guess I should come up with a plot. Or at least an idea for a plot.

I think I want to do this, too. I'm enthralled by the concept.

Oooh. I'm excited now.

Maybe next year...
I first hear about the contents two years ago on NPR And for me, it's still a "next year" thing.

I even have a plot: I'd write a novel about having to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. I'd think it was very funny. And I'm sure that I'm the 200th person to think of that idea.

I've been considering writing a novel about a 30-year old software developer who also teaches Sunday School. Kind of a "A Month In The Life..." sort of thing. Then, I'd just write six pages a day about what I did that day and I should be fine.

Re: Maybe next year...
I seriously thought about doing a word count on the design doc that I wrote last month. It's 42 pages, but a lot of that is pictures and XML schemas. However, I probably wrote at least 10,000 words. 10,000 of the most boring words every committed to electronic paper, but a decent total nonetheless.

Oooooo. I can't wait. "A Month in the Life" by drmellow. Isn't that why we read your livejournal?

Although intriguing, I think I'll have to wait until next year; paramedic clinicals beckon. But that's OK. I'll have bodnej to keep me company, and I'll have a year to pretend like I'm constructing a plot!

TOO COOL!
I am so in. We can 'encourage' each other.

And don't worry about what mom thinks about your sleep patterns. She's probably wrong. It happens. One of my ideas is that a person is getting enough sleep until they pass out. Then they are getting some sleep so when they wake up they have gotten enough sleep. The rule is that if you are conscious then you've gotten enough sleep. But I might be wrong on this. It happens...

Re: TOO COOL!
Although weirdly simplified, you have indeed hit on the body's physiological mechanism for coping with sleep deprivation. I highly recommend a (somewhat) regular sleeping pattern for one reason: Isn't it inconvenient when you spontaneously pass out? (Some "SIMS" imagery comes to mind...)
