Johnny Cash

I Heard The News Today, Oh Boy

*ring* ... *ring*

drmellow Hello, this is Greg.
aunt_toad I thought you'd probably be up already.
drmellow Yeah.
aunt_toad I just wanted to let you know that Johnny Cash died.
drmellow Oh? Thanks. I hadn't heard that yet.
aunt_toad They said it was complications with diabetes.
drmellow Sure. That makes sense.

Wow. I'm not surprised, but still. There weren't any indications in that this was imminent in any of the articles I read about his hospital release yesterday, but I guess if you read between the lines, they were there.

Google News already has 170 articles about the subject, and I'm sure that more will be coming during as the day goes on. I'll be reading them as I have time. JohnnyCash.com was refusing my connections. I bet their servers are overloaded. I updated the site I maintain.

Here's my favorite duet that Johnny and June used to sing. I just heard a commentator say that the official cause of death is complications with diabetes, but Johnny probably died of a broken heart. I speculated that would happen, too.

Far Side Banks Of Jordan

I believe my steps are growing wearier each day,
Still I have a journey on my mind;
The wars of this old world has ceased to make me want to stay,
But my one regret is leaving you behind.

If it proves to be God's will that I am first to go,
And somehow I've a feeling it will be;
When it comes your time to travel, likewise, don't prolong,
For I will be there waiting, don't you see.

I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan,
I'll be waiting, drawing pictures in the sand;
And when I see you coming I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

Through this life we've labored hard to earn our meager fare,
It brought us trembling hands and failing eyes;
I'll just rest there on the shore and wait for that glad day,
Until you join me there in paradise.

I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan,
I'll be waiting, drawing pictures in the sand;
And when I see you coming I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan,
I'll be waiting, drawing pictures in the sand;
And when I see you coming I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

No road trip for me

I've been trying to figure out how I'll be able to make it to Nashville this weekend and still do all the other things that I need to do in the coming days, but that's no longer an issue for me since the family has decided the visitation and the funeral will be private. There will be a public memorial, but there’s no word yet on when that will take place.

The Cash family released a statement on Friday.  It said, “The family of Johnny Cash, in this sad hour, is greatly comforted by the outpouring of love and respect for his remarkable life.  We take solace in the knowledge that he is again reunited with his dearest companion, June.  Our lives, and indeed the entire planet, will forever feel the emptiness of his loss, but his music and the greatness of his spirit will endure."
