Related to today's earlier APOD, I'd like to state that I don't actually like or endorse Microsoft Outlook. But it's what I (have to) use at work, so that's that. And, yesterday, I learned a new keyboard shortcut for sending mail. I've always used CTRL-ENTER, but repast told me about ALT-S, which I just didn't know about. Now I know, and knowing's half the battle1.

What mail clients do I like? Well, (not counting the web interface to my Yahoo!Mail account) I really only use two with any regularity. Microsoft Outlook at work and Apple's Mail.app at home. I like Mail.app just fine. When I was in college, I used "elm" and "pine." I've even used "mail" enough to not be scared of it.

[1] First person to identify the pop-culture reference gets a point. It's an easy one. [Edit: The point goes to kimber. The answer is in the comments.]

I'm happy to report that I am alt-s'ing again this morning. No idea what happened but I'm 99% sure it wasn't user error. :)

Regardless of one's feelings towards Outlook, I have found (as meep mentioned in the previous post) that keyboard shortcuts have a way of making Outlook and Windows in general Very Unhappy. The only time I have ever been close to tears because of computer issues was the time I was trying to get a proposal out the door by COB (it was 4pm) and every key I pressed brought up the MS help menu. Rebooting didn't even help. It was horrible.

Yeah, but I was scared of xmh.

But I really hated zmail, I'd rather telnet to port 25 than to use that again (we still have some holdouts that bought PC versions of it).

BWAHAHAHAAA!!

*wipes tears of laughter away*

Oh, man. That brought back some good times. :)

I'm still an elm user, and I mean to be until the end of my days!

heh... on the elm thing, more power to you my friend - hopefully it will not see death before you. Anytime I can resurrect the unceasing joy and horror that is, and forever will be Eos, I'm happy to oblige.

If you ever go back to a UNIX mail reader, I'd recommend mutt. The command keystrokes and navigation are almost exactly the same as elm's, but with more features.

rmail

It's gotta be rmail. That's the emacs mail client. It rocks. And you can customize it in maclisp! What could be better? I'll tell you! It's having your e-mail client use the best text editor ever written!
