iPod your BMW

From iPod your BMW:
Connect with music like never before behind the wheel of your BMW 3 Series, and X3 and X5 SAV, Z4 Roadster or MINI. With the installation of an integrated adapter developed by Apple and BMW, you can now control your iPod or iPod mini through the existing audio system and multi-function steering wheel. Which means no loss of power. No loss of sound quality. No loss of control....
Interesting. I bet convenient out of the box integration between iPods (and similar devices) and most makes of new vehicles isn't too far off.

OK. I'm sold. We can get an iPod for the car. I love using the steering wheel audio controls.

I think VW had a promotion where you could get an iPod with a new Bug, but the adapter provided was a casette adapter. How cutting edge is that for you?

I wish car manufacturers would get a clue and include front RCA stereo jacks on all stock car radios so that pretty much any device can be connected instead of forcing people to use casette adapters or flaky FM adapters.

Yup - that's very cool. I can't wait until the VW connection is available for my Gen 2 unit. Dension is coming out with ice:Link, an iPod connection solution for various automobiles. It probably won't be as clean as the Apple/BMW solution, but that sort of connection is no doubt coming soon for more vehicles.

What makes this integration interesting isn't just a line-in from iPod to BMW. You get two nifty features:

1. You can create up to 5 custom "BMW" playlists, which can be selected (and you can forward/back/random through them) from the steering wheel controls.

2. The names of the track/album/artist appears on the console.

I'm positive about #1 and pretty sure about #2. And either one is not a standard, cross-MP3 player feature. That means that if you want an MP3 player that works well with your BMW (and soon, other cars), you will need to get an iPod. Apple is taking a page from the Microsoft playbook :-)
