Drinking Songs

I love drinking songs. I hope you do, too. I love drinking songs so much that I'm on a quest to determine the best drinking song out there. I know a lot of drinking songs, but I'm not so arrogant to think that I know them all, or even know the best one. So use the comments here to suggest drinking songs (title and artist, please). I'll collect all the suggestions and make a poll. Then everyone can vote for the best drinking song.

Then we can try to get a presidential candidate to use our choice in their campaign. With Bush and Kerry essentially being the same person, I'm almost willing to give my vote to whichever candidate will use a drinking song in their campaign.

Now playing: I Think I'll Just Sit Here And Drink - Merle Haggard (wqfs Radio)

"The Drinking Song", Electric Angels
I never really loved you
I just drank too much
Well I never really loved you
I just drank too much
Drank too much of your sweet wine
Oh but now I'm feelin' fine
'Cuz I never really loved you
I just drank too much
Drank too much

"Saturday night's alright for fighting", Elton John
A couple of the sounds that I really like
Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike'
I'm a juvenile product of the working class
Whose best friend's close in the bottom of a glass, oh!

Don't give us none of your aggravation
We've had it with your discipline
Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in

Re: "Saturday night's alright for fighting", Elton John
While it is a fantastic song, the image of Elton John in a knife fight always makes me crack up...

Oh, the tape is old. I haven't listened to it in forever. It probably needs updating.

The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)
Tom Waits

The piano has been drinking, my necktie is asleep
And the combo went back to New York, the jukebox has to take a leak
And the carpet needs a haircut, and the spotlight looks like a prison break
And the telephone's out of cigarettes, and the balcony is on the make
And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking...

And the menus are all freezing, and the light man's blind in one eye
And he can't see out of the other
And the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid, and he showed up with his mother
And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking
As the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler cream-puff casper milktoast
And the owner is a mental midget with the I.Q. of a fence post
'Cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking...

And you can't find your waitress with a Geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends and you just can't get served without her
And the box-office is drooling, and the bar stools are on fire
And the newspapers were fooling, and the ash-trays have retired
'Cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking
The piano has been drinking, not me, not me, not me, not me, not me...

And of course there's "There's a tear/In my beer/'Cause I'm cryin' for ya dear..."

And Dennis Leary's Traditional Irish Folk Song"

I can't believe no one's mentioned "Why Don't We Get Drunk And Screw?" by Jimmy Buffett...

Good one!

My mom used to listen and sing along to Songs You Know By Heart in the car when I was little, and for quite a long time, when Jimmy would sing, "Why don't we get drunk, and screw?" Mom would sing, "Why don't we get drunk, AND DRINK SOME MORE?" trying to keep me from hearing the "and screw" part. It was pretty unsuccessful, but I played along for a couple years. :)

That's funny. When my friend, Sarah, and I were in middle school (and big Buffett fans), we would ride around in our parents' cars and sing loudly, so that they wouldn't hear the real lyrics, "Why don't we CATCH SKUNK, and MAKE STEW?" I'm not sure that was very successful, either.

I was thinking that one, while reading the other entries.

I also like the classic Dead Kennedys after-drinking song:)

The Drinking song from the Student Prince

Drink! Drink! Drink!
To eyes that are bright as stars when they're shining on me!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
To lips that are red and sweet as the fruit on the tree!
Here's a hope that those soft arms will twine
Tenderly, trustingly soon around mine!

All I ask is a right to see
those smiling eyes beguiling me
Drink! Drink!
Let the toast start!
May young hearts never part!
Drink! Drink! Drink!
Let every true lover salute his sweetheart!
Let's drink!

Depends on the mood...
Drunk, life sucks: "Ball and Chain" - Social Distortion or "Lost Horizons" - Gin Blossoms

Drunk, piano bar: "Piano Man" - Billy Joel

Drunk, think you're invincible: "I Won't Back Down" - Tom Petty

Drunk, party song: "Mony, Mony" - Billy Idol

Yeah, the last two aren't ABOUT drinking, but they're songs for when you ARE drinking.
