Calling All Depeche Mode Fans

I won a free song from the Pepsi-iTunes contest. (No, I didn't drink a Pepsi -- I had a Diet Mountain Dew.) I was trying to decide what song to get and couldn't think of what I wanted. Then, as I was thumbing through my copy of the most recent Johnny Cash biography, I noticed that many of the chapters were titled after the songs that Cash has recorded over his past several albums on the American Recordings label.

That's when I remembered that I always wanted to pick up a copy of Depeche Mode's version of Personal Jesus, which I've heard on college radio a few times, but don't have a copy for myself. I thought it would be easy to get from the iTunes Music store -- just search and purchase. How wrong I was! It turns out that the search returned 18 versions of Depeche Mode singing Personal Jesus. Some of the them are obvious repeats -- on "best of" type albums, but most of them are distinct versions: acoustic, live, different mixes, etc.

So now I'm stumped. And what do you do when you're stumped? You turn to LiveJournal. So tell me, LiveJournal, what version of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus should I pick up? And why? Alternatively, suggest a completely different song I should get with my free code.

If you're looking for the version you heard on college radio and later MTV, you're most likely looking for the version off the 1990 album Violator. Alternately, a very similar version (if not the exact same version) can be found on disc 1 of the album Singles 86-98.

Thanks. I'm not set on getting the one that I've heard on radio/MTV/etc. before -- when I saw all the choices, I figured I'd see if anyone could suggest "the best" version to get, so if you think one of the other versions are better, feel free to weigh in....

The whole "Violater" album is great, so I would suggest getting it even if you found another version of the song you liked better.

You could, alternatively, download the Greatest Song Ever: My Perogative, by Britney Spears.

Or not. =P

Yeah, she covered it for her "Greatest Hits" album. I got yelled at when I heard BB singing it on the radio the other day and said "hey, it's the Britney song!"

It depends on how dance-y you want to be. We have Violator (Violator? I don't even know her!), so that's the version that I'm familiar with.

How about Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt"?
