DreamHost sale on web hosting

I've been using Dreamhost as my web host provider (greg.cohoon.name and RadioDTB) and have been very happy with them. I highly recommend them, and not just because I'll get a kickback for referrals.

So now, I'm really happy to troll for referrals because they're having a sale on their plans if you prepay for 1 or 2 years. It's their birthday promotion -- I originally signed up under a similar promotion. For the first 888 customers to use promo code "888" when signing up, they will give an 80% discount. So a 1-year plan that is normally $120 is just $24. It's a great deal. (Apparently, the discount only applies to the first year, so if you sign up for a multi-year plan, only the first year is at 80% discount. Thanks drjekyll for pointing that out.)

They've also recently updated their services. Highlights for the cheapest plan (the one I have):
  • 4800 MB disk space
  • 120 GB monthly bandwidth
  • unlimited domains hosted
  • unlimited sub-domains hosted
  • unlimited mySQL databases
  • PHP, Ruby on Rails, Full Unix Shell, CVS, WebDAV
If you've been thinking about getting a web host, or switching to a new provider, now is a great time to check out Dreamhost.

Be sure to use promo code "888" when you sign up in order to get the discount. And please tell them that "drmellow" sent you. If you use the promo code to get the great price, I won't end up getting a kickback, but tell 'em I sent you anyway, just 'cause. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions I can answer about their service.

Yes. They make it very easy to set up a WordPress blog, which is what I use for RadioDTB. You can also use install other blogging software yourself if you'd rather not use WordPress.

I just signed up for one of these, I've been waiting for a good deal to come along on it. One thing to note.. that 80% off is only for the first year, not both years. So it's actually $114 and change.

oh, and it said something about waiving the right to a referrer when using the promotion code, guess it won't be helping you out after all.

Thanks for the clarification -- I've updated my post appropriately.

Another thing they added, is that you can fully host unlimited domains. Way cool.

Yeah. I'm really happy with that. Especially since they've been upping the storage and bandwidth limits, it makes a lot more sense to be able to manage as many domains as I want under one account.

I just downgraded my account, because of that, lol.

I just signed up!
I'd been thinking about jumping from my current host, and this gave me the reason. :-)

I'll end up paying for 2 years what I usually pay for 1. My other hosting company is just about to renew my account, and I don't want to take down my site until Oct 4th (baseball season ends, and my fantasy league depends on my site being up), so I'll have to finagle that detail next week when I transfer the data, but that's a minor detail.

Re: I just signed up!
Yup, go ahead and set up the skeleton of your site at DreamHost, replicate the data next week, and switch the DNS once you're satisfied the data looks good.

Out of curiosity, do you know which HTTP server they use?

The response back from Greg's dot-name site indicated Apache 1.3.33 (Unix)

Thanks! for the pointer. I've been meaning to resurrect a domain I have and it's hard to beat $24 to give them a test run.
