Walk The Line

Apparently, Walk The Line was not nominated for a Best Motion Picture Academy Award. To be fair, I have not seen any of the nominees, but I find it difficult to believe that all five of them are better than Walk The Line.

Seriously, Walk The Line is one really good picture.

At least the two main performances got nominated for Best Actor/Actress. And the movie got a handful of other nominations.

(You might consider fixing your "link".) :P

The four out of the five films that I recognized are all propaganda films.

You may find this post interesting. Comparing the 5 films Hollywood says were the best to the top grossing films of 2005 (the ones that the public apparently thinks were best), one finds the Oscar nominees not in the top 5, nor even the top 10. Rather, their positions are at 47 (Crash), 66 (Brokeback Mountain), 70 (Munich), 98 (Good Night, and Good Luck), and 129 (Capote).

Of course, popularity isn't everything, but you'd think that Hollywood would at least think somewhere above #47.

Furthermore, the thing is I don't expect The Academy to nominate the top five grossing films. Entertaining films will always make lots of money, but to expect something like "War Of The Worlds" to be in contention for Best Picture is asking a bit too much. Yes, I want The Academy to pick "good" films instead of just "popular" films -- I think a good drama is more deserving of an Oscar than most comedies or action films, e.g. Sometimes, the public gets it right, though -- according to the list you referenced, Walk The Line made the top 20. It was an extremely well-done movie, too. I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan, either.

*shrug* I've cared very little about the Oscars for some time now. I think this year's nominations will pretty much nail the coffin shut on my interest in them.
