The Roman Empire

I want to do some reading about the Roman Empire. Politics, military, social issues, everything. All I know about Rome is what I picked up here and there -- a bit of history that my Latin teacher snuck in from time to time, I've read Shakespeare's Julias Caesar, Biblical-related knowledge. It's a passing knowledge, but not very deep.

Anyone have any good recommendations for a good book or two related to the Roman Empire?

I've got a bunch of stuff at home. Roman history and archaeology was my focus in both college and grad school. As for one book that will give a good introduction to everything? I can't help you.

Try the classics community. They answer this question all the time.

Anything by Steven Runciman is wonderful and fantastic. He especially focused on the Roman Empire after its capitol shifted to Constantinople in the 4th century. I love reading Runciman—he's such a wonderful storyteller, that it's always fun to pick up his work. (And they liked him so much in Greece that they named a street after him in Mystra.)

I was going to recommend the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but I see someone already linked to it.
