Current location

brad just mentioned that LJ is adding location features. You can set per-user and per-entry ICBM (lat/long, basically) coordinates. Additionally, there's a new per-entry field called "Current Location" on the web interface that allows free-form text. This might be an interesting new feature for LJ.

Update: It looks like the "Current Location" tag will tie to Google Maps, so if you put something in it that is reasonable for Google Maps, it will give you a link to your location on Google Maps.

Well, yeah. But it's optional. ;-)

Can you explain this in blonde terms? =) Thank you!

If you want to add information in LJ related to your physical location, now you can.

The easiest way is to put something in the "Current Location" text field when you create/modify a post via the web interface (for you, e.g., that's at http://neebs.livejournal.com/update ). If you look at this post, you'll notice that I set my location to "Greensboro, NC" -- and if you click on that, it brings up a Google Map page to Greensboro. I didn't do anything special to make that map come up -- the magic of LiveJournal made that link for me.

You can put other things in that field if you want ("work", "school", "on the train", "in the basement", etc.), but something like that wouldn't make sense when it creates the link to Google Maps. Of course, it's just a tag in your journal, so if something like "in the basement" is more meaningful to you than "Washington, DC", then use that and ignore the link to Google Maps.

I'm guessing that, in the future, LJ will be adding location-related features. One thing brad mentioned, e.g., is that they'll have things that will let up upload a picture for a giving location. So, maybe in the future, you'll be able to say "work" for your location and have it tie to a picture of your office. It's still kinda early to see what features they plan to have for it, I think.

You can probably just ignore per-entry ICBM stuff -- it's geeky more than anything else. The per-user ICBM stuff will let you put a longitude and lattitude coordinate (exact geographic location on the earth) for your entire journal. That's kinda neat, but mostly geeky.

Also, if you're concerned about being stalked because of information available in your LiveJournal, you probably don't want to play with this feature. Especially the per-user ICBM coordinate, since that allows for an exact location tied to your journal.

Does that make more sense? If not, ask more questions and I'll try to explain more.
