You know, mine doesn't expire for another 3 years, but I think it would be worth the $67 to renew it tomorrow.

I have a love/hate relationship with RFID technology. I love our EZ-Pass and our Mobile Speedpass. I hate RFID being used for gov't ID purposes. That said, our EZ-Pass came with an RF shielded bag to "turn it off" when we didn't want to use it or store it from prying "eyes". Perhaps this can be done with the new passports. I'm still going to renew my passport before the new ones come out though.

I got a passport back when I graduated college and renewed it fairly recently. However, in all that time I haven't used it, or even thought about traveling abroad. So I think I'll take my chances.

I urged the Wife to get a passport a while back for this same reason, but she's even less likely to travel outside the US than I am.

I had similar thoughts, but I also have no idea what I'll be doing eight or ten years for now, and I'd like to give myself the possibility of an RFID-free passport if I needed one.

I know I have no desire even to visit, let alone live and work for an extended period in, any other country. Why submit myself to even more government oppression, the expected suspicion of the locals that is standard fare for foreigners no matter how polite I may be, plus the especial scorn and abuse and even terrorist threats reserved for me just for being an American? Forget it. I'll keep my money stateside where I'm welcome. That's not going to change in 10 years.

On many levels I agree with you. On other levels, I sometimes feel the call of the mission field trying to pull me out of the States. I expect that pull will increase over the next decade.

You know, I have no idea where I would have to go to renew my passport.

Can I just fry it in the microwave for 10 seconds? I don't think the goobermint would take the time to rad-proof these RFID chips, do you?

I think you can get the renewal forms at the Post Office. I also think you can find them one one of the government websites.

As for microwaving the passport, that'll likely kill the RFID, but it may also invalidate your passport -- some of the reports I've seen indicate that a passport with a broken RFID would be considered an invalid document and you'd have to get a new one.

"Funny, darn things keep breaking on me. This is the 8th one in a row!"
