Skipping Today's Run

I slept too late to be able to work in today's run and get to work on time. I'll have to make sure to get up early enough tomorrow to make it up.

How often do you ride your bike and on average how far do you ride it each time out?

While I've established a pattern for my running, I still don't have a good pattern for my bike riding. I pulled it out of the shed a few weeks ago and have been on a couple of rides. One was about seven or eight miles, in the neighborhood. The other was about five miles, on trails.

My goal is to turn turn Tuesdays and Thursdays into bike days by riding my bike to work on those days. That would be about a three mile ride each way, and depending on how much time I had before and/or after work, I could go "the long way" and increase the mileage at will.

If I did that, I'd have a good weekly exercise schedule: run on Monday, bike on Tuesday, run on Wednesday, bike on Thursday, take Friday off, long run on Saturday, walk on Sunday. My whole exercise schedule revolves around increasing my long runs on Saturdays so that I'll be comfortable running with a marathon next year.

I never was much on running after I left the Army. I think my longest run then was 7 miles. My dad on the other hand racked up hundreds of miles while stationed in Germany. We both stopped running after we got out.

Your schedule sounds like a good plan though. Where is the marathon being held?

I've been looking at mountain bikes here lately and hopefully come tax time I'll be back in the saddle again. It was fun and good exercise, which I really could use.

I'm targeting the 2008 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. My brother ran it last year, and that was what really inspired me to give it a try. Once I got into running, I really started enjoying it. Having a goal like this helps, too.

I've started my training early enough that I don't think I'll have any problem running in that marathon.
