General Upgrade for Ham License

I took the test to upgrade my Ham License to General this morning...

...and passed!

They offered me the Amateur Extra exam for free afterwards, which I failed miserably. I hadn't looked at any Extra material at all, but hey -- no harm in trying. Anyway, after taking the test, I've decided that it's something that I can definitely study for and pass. I think the current Extra pool is good until next year, so if I think I'll be able to carve out some study time this spring, I'll try to go for it soon. Otherwise, I'll wait until the new question pool is in place, and new study material is available.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about upgrading to General. Now I just have to find a way to install an unobtrusive antenna and start trying to work some distant stations....

In other exciting news, yarbiedoll passed her Technician exam!

That's awesome! I really need to get back into this too. :D

Congratulations again!

Dad had a 50-foot aerial in the back yard. It irritated the neighbors until he and Mom (correctly) pointed out that said 50-foot aerial also acted like a lightning rod for the neighborhood and thus protected their property from lightning strikes. (He had a grounding setup that we'd flip whenever a storm blew up, in order to protect our house). So if you can't get unobtrusive, maybe a bit of p.r. will help.

You keep talking about this and I'm going to end up finding a way to get myself a 2-m or something, and then I'll have no excuse for not taking the exam...

Well, you probably don't need me to tell you that it's not that difficult to get the license now -- the exam just requires a bit of studying, and there are plenty of study materials and practice exams out there. There's no Morse Code requirement for any of the licenses anymore, so there's no reason to let that hold you back.

So go ahead and start planning for that -- 'cause I'm going to keep talking about this. ;-)

That's great. I saw a cacher last night at the 1K event with his handheld unit on his belt.
