I've known about many differences in Bible translations for some time. Different versions attempt to wrangle the original languages into "modern" language, with varying degrees of success and employing differing philosophies on how the translation should occur. I've heard/read the arguments, I have my own ideas, etc. I know that some people think that there is only one valid English translation.

The sermon linked from the RLP site is the first time I've ever seen anyone *really* get passionate about their preferred translation, and he takes an interesting phrase (I think it's from 1 Kings 21:21, but there are 5 other instances of the same phrase) to hang his argument on.

All in all, his sermon comes off as very unintentionally humorous.

I couldn't watch the whole thing. It actually started making me sick. Because while most wouldn't hang their theology on that single phrase, that school of though (about "what a man is") is rampant.

Gah. I can't even ... *headdesk*

While I would like to understand the choice of phrasing in the KJV (the Geneva Bible also uses it, FWIW), hanging theology on isolated phrases is quite foolish.

I've come to understand that relying on a single translation to build theology is unwise.

that said, NASB > ESV > NIV > RSV > NKJV > KJV.

that is all.

I mostly agree, but I think yo might have NASB and ESV switched.

More than anything, though, I like having access to several versions and looking at the different translations when I do any in-depth study.
