I Just Saw Obama

Well, more accurately, I just saw the bus he was riding in. Apparently, Senator Obama was in town today. I hadn't heard about that -- the first time I heard anything about it was when a police officer wouldn't let me go through the intersection because the motorcade was about to come by. I was on my way home from buying some new guitar strings. Most of the major roads were blocked as I was coming back, and I started to wonder what was going on. Somehow, my normal route home wasn't blocked until I got to this particular intersection, where no other cars were. There were a handful of people who had gathered along the road, some with signs. I had seen several gatherings like that on my way out to the guitar store, as well as several police cars, and wondered what the special event was.

Less than five minutes after I parked the car, the motorcade drove by at about 35mph (according to the police radio). Several police cars, followed several town cars, followed by two busses, followed by several more police cars, followed by two motorcycles. Of course, Senator Obama was nowhere to be seen -- all the vehicles that he might have been in had tinted windows.

Two minutes after the motorcade went by, the police officer let me cross the intersection and go home. I was inconvenienced for a total of less than ten minutes. I hope the people who were intentionally camping out to see the motorcade felt it was worth it. I'd have felt ripped off.

If I knew that I was going to be in a position to see the motorcade, I might have made an anti-DST sign and tried to organize a protest of sorts. More likely, I would have waited an hour before going to the guitar store.
